Last weekend, the Friends University Choral Union (the combined choirs of Singing Quakers, Concert Choir, and Women’s Chorus) premiered my new arrangement of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” at their annual Christmas Candlelight concert. This was a commissioned work especially for this occasion and features mixed voices, brass, organ, timpani and percussion.
This was the final piece of the program and they did a great job with it. Since I am on adjunct faculty there, it was all the more special for me to have some of my choral music performed. I direct the Friends Jazz Vocal Ensemble, and so around campus I tend to be viewed more as the “vocal jazz guy,” which is fine, because I love vocal jazz. (Partly because of that role I re-harmonized the third stanza with some jazz harmonies so as not to disappoint!) But it was nice to show some of my “choral composer” side as well with this piece. I’ve been pleased that so many people have enjoyed the arrangement, and I hope it will spread Christmas cheer for years to come.
Here’s a link for you to listen to a live recording. Let me know what you think!
