2012 Year End Review

As 2012 winds its way down, I thought I’d take a few moments to say THANK YOU to everyone who continues to support and encourage my composing and arranging. It has been a busy year as always, and for a musician, that’s a GOOD thing. I literally could not do this without you! Without your patronage, my music would be a nice hobby instead of a career.

New Piano Music for Christmas Releases

I was pleased to be included in a new collection of Christmas piano arrangements that has just released, “The Essential Collection for Christmas.” This collection includes four of my arrangements, “The Birthday of a King,” “Mary Had a Baby,” “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and “Wonderful Child.” By my count, the book includes a whopping 46 arrangements by many notable arrangers including Joel Raney, Larry Shackley, Lloyd Larson, Cindy Berry, and Patti Drennan.

Lloyd Larsen Selects… Me!

I had a nice surprise the other day: A package arrived in the mail containing a new book of piano arrangements, mainly by Lloyd Larson. “Lloyd Larson Selects” is a new series from the Fred Bock Music Company, where Lloyd selects some of his own favorite arrangements as well as a few other arrangements by some other arrangers he likes. I was pleasantly surprised to see my arrangement included from “Pure Curry,” “Wonderful Words of Life,” in the book! I will say that arrangement is a favorite of mine as well. Usually heard/performed with a waltz feel, my arrangement slows the piece way done, turning it into a reflective ballad with some lush harmonies thrown in for good measure.

Last weekend, the Friends University Choral Union (the combined choirs of Singing Quakers, Concert Choir, and Women’s Chorus) premiered my new arrangement of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” at their annual Christmas Candlelight concert. This was a commissioned work especially for this occasion and features mixed voices, brass, organ, timpani and percussion.

I was browsing along Stuff Christians Like author Jon Acuff’s website last week and noticed this post about the books he was taking to the beach, which got me thinking about my own forthcoming trip to the beach and all the books I wanted to read or bring along. And what a hassle it would be to pack them all.

It’s been waaay too long since I’ve made a blog post, and since today’s my birthday, I thought it would be a good day to reflect a bit.

Last week I finished up my responsibilities at Friends University for the semester, and so I’ve had more time to step back and look at “the big picture” of my life at present.

10 Things I Liked about 2010

I happened to catch a few moments of “Oprah” while channel-surfing the other night. It was her annual “My Favorite Things” show, where she goes through a list of products she likes and then proceeds to give one to each member in the audience. It opened with a bang: an ipad for everyone (!). Once she started handing out designer boots and purses, I moved on. Besides, a room full of screaming women wears on the ears pretty quickly.

But it got me thinking about making my own list of things I liked and things I liked or am grateful about this past year.
